Statistics on Cyber Bullying - An Infographic
February 5, 2017 Trending News
Full description. Growing up in the world of social media and smartphones has its benefits, but there are also consequences - mainly for teenagers. Cyber bullying, or online hazing, has become a serious problem for children around the world. Instead of degrading other children in the playground, many bullies have taken to popular social networks like Facebook to poke fun at others.
What's included. This infographic highlights the disturbing statistics surrounding cyber bullying and includes survey data from PBS and DoSomething.org.
- The core problem of bullying: Survey data shows that almost 50% of all children have been bullied online by peers.
- The role of technology: Online bullying has been tied closely to trends on internet usage by teens. Indeed, almost 94% of teens report owning a smartphone and 89% have a laptop or tablet device. When it comes to social media, 71% of teens use Facebook, 52% use Instagram and other social networks.
- Getting bullied online: 70% of students report seeing frequent online bullying and 70% report that it's a serious problem. The main problem is that because it's online, 80% of teenagers believe that it's easier to get away with bullying someone online (as opposed to in person).
- No filter required: 90% of teens have admitted to seeing peers getting bullied on social media, but chose to ignore it. Almost 75% of students also admit to visiting websites dedicated to bashing other students.
- Gender differences: Young girls are twice as likely as boys to be victims of cyber bullying.
Clearly, online bullying is a serious problem for parents, school administrators and students.
